KPCA Presents Greg Szurnicki Memorial Scholarship

2009 Scholarship Winner:  Michelle Moon

Scholarship Sponsored by Anthony Leteri of USA Recycling & Leteri Waste Management

Michelle Moon & KPCA's Laura McKeon

Anthony Leteri, Gregor Szurnicki, Committee Chair Laura McKeon and KPCA President Mike Rosato

The Greg Szurnicki Memorial Scholarship was presented at the High School Awards Ceremony on June 3rd.  We were joined at the ceremony by Greg’s son, Gregor, and Anthony Leteri from USA Recycling and Leteri Waste Management, who funded this year’s scholarship.  By presenting this scholarship, we honor the memory of one of the founders and longtime President of the Kings Park Civic Association.  Greg’s legacy of community service and volunteerism continues as we awarded the scholarship to Michelle Moon.  In her own life, Michelle has shown the importance of helping others.    She has a stellar academic record, and yet, found time to mentor children from broken homes at the Patchogue Lighthouse, visit the homeless in a city shelter bringing clothing and other necessities she collected, volunteer many hours at Stonybrook University Hospital, tutor children at the Kings Park Library, and assist the PFA(Parent Faculty Association) with annual events at the Parkview School.  Our scholarship winner plans to attend Colgate University in the fall, majoring in biochemistry.  Congratulations and best of luck to Michelle!

KPCA Launches Downtown Revitalization Campaign

With an estimated ninety percent of our residents and most of our local business owners unhappy with the condition of our downtown, the Kings Park Civic Association will offer reccomendations to revitalize and beautify Main Street, Indian Head Road and San Remo shopping areas. We have heard the many complaints and the time for action is now.  The KPCA is currently assemblying a team of residents and business owners to study how we can improve our downtown while still preserving it's history and character.  We look forward to working with our town and county officials as well as the local chamber of commerce.  The KPCA believes our residents deserve a beautiful and safe downtown.

To volunteer for our downtown evitalization/beaufication committee, please contact us at KingsParkCivic@AOL.COM

KPCA Opposes Requested Variances by CVS

Goes on record with opposition at Smithtown Board of Zoning Appeals Meeting

As representatives of the community, the Kings Park Civic Association stated opposition to the CVS application for variances on property currently leased by Waldbaums.  Basing our argument on the five criteria when reviewing a variance, the KPCA keyed on excessive signage in both size and number, a reduction in parking spaces and the impact a 24 hour drive-thru would have on surrounding residential properties.  We believe that acceptance of such variances would have a detrimental impact on the community.  Our letter and example photos were submitted to the Smithtown Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) at the standing room only meeting.
